How to Test Cable Signal Presence for Internet

Learn > Coax Cable Tester > How to Test Cable Signal Presence for Internet

If you are having troubles with your cable Internet connectivity, you may need to rule out any issues with your coax outlet or wiring. Before you contact to your Cable Internet provider, here are a few fixes you can try first to determine if your Internet signal is present or if you have Internet connectivity at all.

Before you call your cable Internet provider, try:

  • Restarting and reconnecting your Internet modem
  • Test each coaxial cable outlet for signal individually using your cable modem
  • Use a coax cable tester, like Hitron’s DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester, to quickly test for an Internet signal at your coax outlets or wiring

The first two fixes are both viable options for checking for an internet presence. Restarting and reconnecting your internet modem can oftentimes solve your connectivity issues. However, if you suspect that your coaxial cable may be bad, you will need to accurately test that coax outlet using a proper tool, such as a coax cable tester.

The importance of accurate testing

It’s important to receive an accurate reading of the presence of an Internet signal from your cable Internet provider to avoid expensive repairs if they find the problem to be yours.  With Hitron’s DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester, it’s specifically designed to accurately detect a set range of signals that only Cable Internet providers use.  When the DSS-01 detects that specific range of signals, it’s LED light displays green to indicate the valid presence of an Internet signal.  If it lights up red, no signal was detected.  The design of the DSS-01 makes it unique in that it looks for the specific signal range rather than voltage like other tools on the market.  Since the DSS-01 only detects that specific signal range, you can be assured that you will not receive any false-positive readings due to hidden splitters in your coax wiring.

Of course, you could carry your cable modem from outlet to outlet to test for the presence of a signal, but this takes time and is a considerable hassle.  With the DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester, you will receive a signal reading in less than 10 seconds.

The absence of an Internet signal can be a frustrating problem to encounter, but with Hitron’s Coax Cable Tester, it will quickly troubleshoot issues with your Internet signal at your coax outlet or wiring, and can help rule out any larger issues that may be affecting your cable Internet service.
