Compatible Devices for a MoCA Network Connection

Learn > MoCA > Compatible Devices for a MoCA Network Connection

Creating a wired MoCA network (Ethernet over Coax network) as the backbone for your WiFi network is a smart move. Why? Because WiFi is vulnerable to interferences. If you support your wireless network with a wired backbone, you get faster speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, an extremely reliable connection and better overall coverage.

The advantage of a MoCA network is that you can get a powerful whole-home network that benefits from a wired connection without running Ethernet through your walls. This saves you a lot of money, construction projects, and frustration.

Types of Compatible MoCA Devices

MoCA technology is pretty versatile. However, there are a few specific devices that you will need to use to set up a successful MoCA network in your home. Common types of MoCA-compatible devices are:

  • MoCA Network Adapters – MoCA network adapters convert your coaxial cable wiring from cable TV services into an Ethernet over coax network (MoCA network). You need at least 1-2 of these to get a MoCA network as a wired backbone for your WiFi.
  • MoCA WiFi Extenders – These devices help boost the reach of your WiFi signal coverage to eliminate dead spots.
  • MoCA-enabled Routers – MoCA routers have built-in MoCA technology which means they require you to only use one MoCA network adapter to create your network.

How to Tell if a Device Supports MoCA

Most often, if a device is compatible with MoCA technology it will have “MoCA” somewhere on the actual device. For example, a MoCA-router will have a sticker or icon on the device itself that indicates it has built-in MoCA capabilities. You can also log into your router’s configuration settings and look for “MoCA” within the settings.

Adapters, extenders and routers are generally compatible with MoCA. But really, any device that you own with an Ethernet port is compatible with MoCA. This means that MoCA is compatible with and supports things like HDTV, personal computers, work computers, gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation, streaming HD audio and media, and more.
