How Far Can WiFi Mesh Reach?

Learn > WiFi Boosters > How Far Can WiFi Mesh Reach?

The maximum distance a WiFi signal can reach depends on your network set up. A typical WiFi router generally has a range of 150-160 feet indoors. It’s important to note that this range is limited by things like frequency, transmission power, antenna type, the location the router is in, and the environment.

That’s why there are WiFi booster solutions like Mesh WiFi for larger homes that need extended coverage. Mesh network coverage is a better fit for larger homes because it provides full, whole-home coverage. Typically, a Mesh WiFi network can provide a signal covering 2,000 to 5,500 square feet.

If you are familiar with Mesh WiFi, you know that you need to place nodes throughout your home to set up the network. If you are new to it, here’s more about Mesh WiFi.

How far away can mesh nodes be?

You can place the second node halfway between the router and the dead zone as you would with a WiFi range extender. Ideally, you will limit the distance to no more than two rooms, or about 30 feet apart.

Does mesh WIFI work through walls?

Yes, Mesh WiFi signals can penetrate through walls depending on how thick they are. Remember, while this is a WiFi boosting solution, it’s still operating on a wireless signal, which is naturally vulnerable to interferences. One way around this is to hardwire your Mesh system using an Ethernet port on your Mesh node or pod.  This ensures that your Internet signal will always go through walls. Especially, the further you are from your router or access point because distance weakens a WiFi (wireless) signal. Hitron’s OS2210 Mesh WiFi system has two Ethernet ports on each node to give you the flexibility of using it wirelessly or as a hardwired network option.

Will mesh WIFI reach outside?

WiFi isn’t just for indoors anymore. By placing a mesh node near an interior wall closest to the outdoor space you want WiFi, you a can get coverage. Generally, you can get a couple hundred square feet of coverage outside your home.

How else can I extend my WiFi signal?

Mesh WiFi might not be the right solution for you if you live in a smaller home or need a more affordable option. There are other great options, such as:WiFi range extenders are devices that you place between your router and the hard-to-reach area. Like Mesh WiFi, the wireless range extender helps extend that reach of the existing WiFi signal to get more coverage.

MoCA technology with MoCA adapters helps convert coaxial cable TV wiring into an Ethernet connection, creating a point-to-point direction connection for always reliable Internet.
