What is a Coax Cable Tester and How Does it Work?

Learn > Coax Cable Tester > What is a Coax Cable Tester and How Does it Work?

A coax cable tester is an essential tool to have when troubleshooting your cable Internet connection. But what exactly is a coax cable tester and how does it work?

A coax cable tester is used to test your coax outlets and cables for connectivity from your Cable Internet provider.  This helps you to determine if there is a problem with your coax wiring or outlet before you connect your modem.  However, not all coax cable testers are created equally and its important that you know the differences.

Detecting Internet Signal

Many coax cable testers use voltage to detect a connection signal on your coax wiring or outlets. While voltage is adequate at detecting connectivity of that wiring or outlet, it does not validate that your Cable Internet is active on that coax wiring or outlet.  Voltage detection is not always the most reliable and may get false readings.

The DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester is engineered to detect a specific range of signals used by Cable Internet providers to deliver Internet.  Because of this, you receive very accurate testing on your coax wiring or outlets and the DSS-01 is not impeded by hidden splitters that may be on your line.

The DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester is extremely easy to use and produces instant test results in less than 10 seconds. To use your DSS-01, you simply need to push the button to turn it on.  The DSS-01 is equipped with a bright, LED-light indicator that will either light up red or green. If the LED-light turns green, a valid Internet signal has been detected. However, if it turns red, no signal is present. If no signal is detected, there may be larger issues at play, such as wiring issues.

Having a coax cable tester is a great tool to have if you move frequently or if you have recently completed a renovation. A coax cable tester can tell you if connecting and receiving an Internet signal is even possible or if there is an outage/inability to connect. A tester like the DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester can give you an accurate signal reading without the hassle of carrying a cable modem from coax outlet to coax outlet to do a simple test.
