What is the Latest DOCSIS Technology?

Let’s just put this out there right away: the latest DOCSIS technology is DOCSIS 3.1.

DOCSIS 3.1 has offered and continues to offer great improvements over 15-year-old DOCSIS 3.0 modems.  We’ve written an article that compares the difference between DOCSIS 3.1 vs DOCSIS 3.0.

What exactly is DOCSIS?

DOCSIS stands for “Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification.” It is a standard that allows data to be transferred over cable lines using an existing coaxial cable TV system.

DOCSIS 3.1 technology is the latest iteration of the DOCSIS standard specified by CableLabs, the R&D arm of the cable TV industry.  DOCSIS 3.1 is designed to provide significantly faster broadband speeds to users.

You can read more details in another article we have, where we cover the advantages of DOCSIS 3.1 over DOCSIS 3.0.

DOCSIS 3.1 features that upgrade your connection

DOCSIS 3.1 has been the standard for a while now, and DOCSIS 3.1 certified cable modems have many great features that will upgrade your Internet connection:

  • DOCSIS 3.1 is “Future Safe” meaning it will provide you with the Gigabit speeds that your ISP is offering today and tomorrow.
  • Up to 10 Gbps download and up to 1 Gbps upload speeds
  • Stronger security than DOCSIS 3.0
  • Reduced packet latency to reduce lag for better video streaming and online gaming
  • Reduced power consumption so you save money on your energy bills, and more.

While DOCSIS 4.0 is being talked about in the news, modems using DOCSIS 4.0 are still in the future. For now, DOCSIS 3.1 modems are the best you can get, and they will serve you well. If you are in the market to upgrade your modem, look for DOCSIS 3.1.

If you’re looking for a cable modem that will future-proof your Internet connection, the Hitron CODA DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem is the best choice for any cable Internet user looking to take their connection to the next level.
