Does DOCSIS 3.1 make a difference?

December 27, 2022

Yes, DOCSIS 3.1 technology makes a big difference when it comes to Internet speed and therefore network performance. A DOCSIS 3.1-certified modem is better for high-speed Internet plans compared to DOCSIS 3.0 because it can support up to 10 Gbps speed plans. Whereas DOCSIS 3.0 can only support up to 1 Gbps, and that’s if you’re lucky.

The difference between DOCSIS 3.1 and lesser tiers?

DOCSIS 3.1 can really only be compared to its previous tier, which is DOCSIS 3.0. And even then, it’s extremely outdated. Here’s the quick breakdown:

Maximum download speed of DOCSIS 3.1 is 10 Gigabit (Gbps)

Maximum download speed of DOCSIS 3.0 is 1 Gigabit (Gbps)

Maximum upload speed of DOCSIS 3.1 is 1 Gigabit (Gbps)

Maximum upload speed of DOCSIS 3.0 is 216 Megabits (Mbps)

DOCSIS 3.1 availability with ISPs

  • DOCSIS 3.1 is fully supported by all the big-name Cable ISPs that you know.

DOCSIS 3.0 availability with ISPs

  • DOCSIS 3.0 is considered old modem technology. Most ISPs consider it end-of-life (EOL).

What if you’re not ready to upgrade your DOCSIS 3.0 modem?

If you’re not ready or not able to upgrade your old DOCSIS 3.0 modem yet (timing, budget, living situation, etc.), that’s okay.

If you are renting your modem, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) should have already supplied you with a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. (You can call them to verify if you are unsure.)

But if you own your modem, upgrading is something to consider before too long. A DOCSIS 3.1 modem is future proof, whereas DOCSIS 3.0 is at its end of life as a technology.

Why the upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 is worth it

To really experience the best Internet connection, full speeds and performance on your home network (including WiFi 6 with a router) you need upgraded devices. Which includes DOCSIS 3.1 for your cable modem.
