Cable modem disconnecting? Here are some quick things to try

If your cable modem is disconnecting, there are a few reasons. The first is that you don’t have a viable cable signal connection, second is that your device may be outdated, and lastly your cable modem could be experiencing interference from something. A Cable Internet signal connection can become vulnerable and obstructed by a few things:

  • Wires get accidently bent
  • Wires rub on surfaces or are walked on repeatedly
  • Animals have chewed the wire
  • Nail or screw through a wire
  • Wires accidentally cut
  • Wires are tripped on accidentally
  • Water may have gotten into your coax wiring

With a cable modem, the connection is wired and should be strong and reliable by nature. So, if you are experiencing issues with your connection, the answer is that your cable signal has probably run into problems or your modem is outdated.

Before you resort to updating your cable modem or cable modem router to a modern version, check to see that the issue isn’t with your cable signal by checking your coax wiring and coax outlets.

You can test your cable signal at home easily with a coax cable tester that helps with  troubleshooting your cable Internet connection.  Hitron’s patent-pending method accurately detects a valid broadband Internet signal from your Cable Internet provider, unlike other solutions.

Coax Wiring and Your Internet Signal

Coax wiring typically runs within your walls and to your cable TV outlets, also known as coax outlets.  Your coax wiring delivers your Cable Internet signal to each coax outlet or coax wire within your home or garage.  If your coax wiring becomes impeded in some way, your Internet signal may become intermittent or cut off completely.  For example, coax wiring can run along baseboards, outside of your walls, across doorways, run within your insulation in your attic or maybe even be hidden under carpeting.  As such, your coax wiring can become vulnerable to bending, rubbing, accidental cuts/severing of the wiring or even animal chewing (think squirrel or pet cat that has a thing for wires!).  Any one of these things can interrupt or stop your Internet signal from reaching your devices, but there is a solution!

How to Test Your Coax Cables

You don’t know what you don’t know. And unfortunately, you can’t just look at your walls and outlets and know if the cable signal is viable. That’s where a coax cable tester comes in.

Testing the coax outlet or wiring helps you find a valid cable Internet signal. Testing your coaxial cable for Internet can help you quickly and accurately pin-point the issue if there is any. And if you are experiencing a cable modem that keeps disconnecting, then this should be step-one in troubleshooting.

To test your coax cable:

  1. Use a coax cable tester like Hitron’s DSS-01 Coax Cable Testerto instantly know if your coax outlet or wiring is receiving a valid signal from your Cable Internet provider.

Using the DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester is a super easy way to find a signal. It’s easier than using other types of testers that detect voltage. It takes less than 10 seconds to know if the coax outlet or wiring is receiving a valid signal.  One push of a button and you will know if the coax outlet or wiring is receiving a signal – a Green light means a valid signal is detected; a Red light means no signal was detected.  So fast and easy!

While in this article we are talking about fixing an issue that already exists, using a coax cable tester is also a great tool to use when setting up your cable modem in a new location, and it will save you a ton of time and helps you avoid a costly visit from a Technician!
