What is a Multi-Gig Speed Cable Modem?

A multi-Gig speed cable modem is valuable for anyone who relies on a high-speed Internet connection. A cable modem that is multi-Gig, also known as multiple-Gigabit, will provide faster speeds and greater data transmission capacity to any device connected to it, such as a WiFi router, access point or Mesh system.  But what exactly is a multi-Gig cable modem?

Multi-Gigabit cable modem

A multi-Gig speed cable modem is a modem that allows you to access Internet speeds greater than 1 Gigabit per second (1 Gbps).  And because it’s a cable modem, it connects to high-speed Internet over a coaxial (coax) cable connection.

Multi-Gig speed cable modems are specifically designed to support multi-Gigabit speeds. Which means they support a range of speeds, from 1 Gigiabit to 2.5 Gigabits per seconds depending on what your devices demand.

How do multi-Gig cable modems work?

Multi–Gigabit cable modems require two key features to achieve their multi-Gigabit speeds:

  • 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port
  • DOCSIS 3.1 technology

2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Port

The 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, also called GigE (which is short for Gigabit Ethernet), is used to connect your computer or networking devices such as a WiFi router, access point or Mesh system.  It is capable of providing speeds up to 2.5 Gigabits per second to your connected device.  These extremely fast speeds support high-volume of data traffic as well as devices that are bandwidth hungry, such as multiple 4K HD streaming, lag-free online gaming and faster download and upload speeds.

DOCSIS 3.1 Technology

DOCSIS 3.1 technology is the latest DOCSIS technology and is 10x faster and more efficient than older DOCSIS 3.0.  DOCSIS 3.1 uses advanced data signaling design to provide higher data throughput and greater bandwidth capacity to your connected devices.  DOCSIS 3.1 provides stronger security protection than older DOCSIS 3.0 modems that are now considered end-of-life by most ISPs.

You can read more about DOCSIS 3.1 here.

Advantages of multi-Gig modems

  1. Faster download & upload speeds:multi-Gigabit modems can provide speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, plus with DOCSIS 3.1, they have twenty-times faster upload speeds. DOCSIS 3.1 technology is designed to increase the efficiency of data transmission over smaller pathways, so it can transmit vast amounts of data, at significantly faster speeds.
  2. Lower latency: most multi-Gig modems use DOCSIS 3.1 technology which has OFDM and OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) to create 3X higher throughput than single OFDM (DOCSIS 3.0 only has single OFDM).  OFDM/OFDMA gives more efficient performance and vastly reduces latency and lag up to 50%.
  3. Gigabit Internet speeds:any modem or cable modem that has a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port will be able to deliver speeds up to 2.5 Gbps to connected devices.
  4. Advanced modem security:most multi-Gigabit-capable modems are the latest technology and will have stronger security protocols over older DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems. This is mostly due to the fact that DOCSIS 3.0 technology was developed in 2006 which is over 15 years ago.
  5. Future-proof your Internet speeds:Even with DOCSIS 4.0 technology on the horizon, DOCSIS 3.1 is still considered future-proof because it is capable of handling Internet speed plans up to 10 Gbps. With DOCSIS 3.1 technology, your cable modem is able to handle the speeds that your ISP currently offers, as well as any future speed plan increases in the years to come.

Hitron’s CODA56 cable modem has all these features and more. Including a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port to ensure that you achieve the 2.5 Gbps speeds you want (and pay for).  Hitron’s CODA56 multi-Gigabit modem is available to purchase on Amazon.
