Does your cable modem keep disconnecting? There may be several key reasons why this is happening:
- Modem is overheating – Heat isn’t able to escape from your modem appropriately because it is being blocked by an object or it’s located in a tight space. Check to make sure your modem has plenty of “breathing space” around it so the heat can escape and your modem can perform better.
- Modem needs cleaning – Over time, your modem may need to be cleaned as it can attract a build-up of dirt and dust on its internal components. Oftentimes, a quick shot of compressed air into the modem with clear out any dusty debris.
- Modem age – If your modem is several years old, it may not be performing as it once did and needs to be replaced.
- Modem is overworking – Your modem has likely been powered on for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 365 days a year. Your modem may benefit from being powered off when you are not using it (such as after you go to bed).
Regardless of the reason, your cable modem frequently disconnecting can be a serious issue in relation to your WiFi and Internet. Before immediately buying a new cable modem, you may want to test your coaxial wiring and cables (using Hitron’s DSS-01 Coax Cable Tester) to see if the problem lives with your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Here’s a checklist of things to check before you go shopping for a new modem:
- Make sure your Internet is activated with your ISP
- Check that your coax cable connections are secure at the modem and coax outlet.
- Power your modem off for 10 seconds or more and then power it back on.
- Restart both your computer and router that connect to your cable modem.
If the issue isn’t derived from your ISP or the above fixes don’t work, it may be time for a new cable modem. Consider looking at cable modems that have the latest technology and fast uplink speeds, like the CODA DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem.
