How many devices can 1 Gigabit support?

November 9, 2022

Modems or routers that have a 1 Gigabit Ethernet port are capable of providing that speed “out” to your end devices.  But have you wondered how many devices you can connect to those speeds and still achieve fast speeds?

Depending on your Internet activities, 1 Gigabit can be plenty to support all the devices in your home. But how do you know if it’s enough for your household? Let’s get into it.

Is Gigabit enough for my home?

Gigabit Internet, also called Gig-speed internet, is a broadband internet connection that can reach data transfer rates of up to 1 Gigabit-per-second (1 Gbps) or faster. These speeds are 10 times faster than the average broadband speed of 100 Mbps. Faster speeds like 1Gbps allow you to do many heavy bandwidth activities, such as:

  • Download a full HD movie in just a few minutes
  • Upload large files in seconds
  • Stream ultra-HD videos
  • Online game with no lag
  • and more.

The higher your upload and download speed, the better your Internet experience and performance will be.

How do you get a Gigabit connection?

Gigabit Internet network requires using either a fiber optic or coaxial cable connection with your modem or cable modem. Because this is a wired connection, it’s reliable and stable in its performance and speeds. When your end devices are connected via a Gigabit Ethernet port (GigE port) located on your modem/router, the Internet speed connection out to your end devices is determined by the Ethernet port capability on your modem/router.

How many devices can gig internet support?

A one Gigabit (1Gbps) network connection can support many devices. Some sources say one Gig can support up to 50 devices. Others say no more than 10 devices to avoid any slowdowns.

Ultimately, it depends on your Internet usage. It’s important to note that multiple devices can’t reach that speed simultaneously. The bandwidth will be shared between them. More connected devices = less speed.

So, if your modem/router’s Ethernet port has theoretical speeds up to 1Gbps or more, then it is possible to transfer those speeds to your devices.

A cable modem like Hitron’s CODA cable modem has a 1-Gig Ethernet port to support all of your devices and delivers extremely fast Internet connection speeds.

Internet speeds in your home are highly dependent on the modem you use. To get the maximum speeds out of your Internet plan and to improve your speeds, switch to a DOCSIS 3.1 powered cable modem.
