What is Ethernet Over Coax & How Does it Make My Wi-Fi Better?

Learn > MoCA > What is Ethernet Over Coax & How Does it Make My Wi-Fi Better?

Ethernet over Coax, or Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) is a technology designed to boost your Wi-Fi network. MoCA technology is Ethernet over coax.

MoCA uses the existing coaxial cable wiring in your home to create a kind of “superhighway” for your Internet connection. It offers fast speeds, solid connection, low latency and low lag. You can get MoCA in your home by using MoCA adapters. They do not require addition wiring, expensive installation or holes in walls. They are a plug-and-play solution that can be set up in minutes.

How MoCA makes Wi-Fi Better

There’s no doubt that Wi-Fi is great. It is super convenient, and we have learned to live with it like the air around us. However, Wi-Fi has shortcomings. Wireless networks experience varying speeds and signal strengths. It’s the nature of the technology because Wi-Fi is so vulnerable to obstacles and interferences. However, when you pair your Wi-Fi internet with a wired solution like HT-EM4 MoCA adapters, your Internet connection becomes more direct and therefore is instantly more reliable.

How MoCA Adapters Work

MoCA Adapters work in pairs. They send Internet data (such as video streaming date, video conference call data, video gaming data, etc.) through the coaxial wiring in your home. This is wiring that already exists in your home and is the reason that you do not need to invest in any additional installation expense or mess.

Because MoCA is a direct connection from your home wiring to your device, it isn’t as vulnerable as wireless internet, either, which makes it a secure connection.

All you have to do is connect a first MoCA adapter to your router and the second to your media player, laptop, gaming console or HDTV that is near a coaxial port. Some routers are already MoCA enabled. If you have a router with MoCA already built-in, then you only need one single MoCA adapter at the other end to make this work.

If you are trying to decide is Ethernet over coax or MoCA is right for you, try following this guideline: If your device is often portable, like a laptop, then stick to Wi-Fi for convenience. But if your device is often stationary, like a gaming console, DVR, HDTV, etc. wire it up.  Yes, Wi-Fi is more convenient than a wired solution. But a wire here or there is a small price to pay when you get to enjoy your streaming and gaming without connection issues every time.

Looking to boost your Wi-Fi? MoCA technology is the way to go. You can enhance your Wi-Fi connection with HT-EM4 MoCA adapters in your home today.
