How Do I Boost my WiFi Signal?

Learn > WiFi Boosters > How Do I Boost my WiFi Signal?

There are a handful of common culprits for why your WiFi signal struggles: distance, obstructions, interference, capacity and devices that hog your bandwidth. These are common issues, and they are easy to fix. All it takes are a few adjustments to boost your WiFi signal. Most of which you can do for free. Here are some ways to boost your WiFi to improve your Internet today.

Boosting your WiFi in 5 Different Ways

Boosting your WiFi will help boost your Internet speed. Here are some easy things to try today:

First, before trying any of these tips, run an Internet speed test. Knowing what your current speeds are will help you know if these tips improved your speeds. You can easily run a speed test by searching “Internet speed test” in Google and clicking Google’s “Run speed test” button.

WiFi signal boosting tips:

  1. Move your router

Make sure your router isn’t too far away from your devices. It also should not be too close to metal appliances or behind thick walls. These are all WiFi signal disruptors.

  1. Connect to the 5GHz frequency band

If your WiFi signal is struggling and your Internet is slow, try changing your router’s frequency channel from 2.4 GHz to 5GHz for a boost. This frequency channel is often less busy.

  1. Update your router’s firmware

Keep your router updated as often as possible. This protects again any malware attacks, which can take up your bandwidth and spread across your network. This can become both a safety issue and a slow WiFi issue.

  1. Switch to a less congested channel

Think of WiFi router channels like a highway. If too much is going on one channel, there will be a traffic jam. Find the channel on your router that is occupied the least and switch to it. This can boost your connection speeds.

  1. Use WiFi booster devices like adapters and extenders

While the other tips are free things you can do with your existing router setup, using a WiFi booster like MoCA adapters or WiFi range extenders does require you to invest in the devices. However, they are an affordable investment, and the payoff is worth it. These devices help extend the reach of your WiFi signal to create a blanket of coverage in your home to eliminate weak signal areas.
